The quality of an education system cannot exceed the quality of its teachers.

Dear friends,

We became teachers because we want to teach, and to teach well. Most teachers whom I have worked with were in one way or another impacted by an inspiring teacher at some point in their life and some students went on to become teachers.
What does it mean to teach well? What does good teaching look like? What characterises an effective teacher? In the introduction of his book titled "The Courage to Teach", Parker Palmer writes:

" . . . teachers possess the power to create conditions that can help students learn a great deal or keep them from learning much at all. Teaching is the intentional act of creating those conditions and good teaching requires that we understand the inner resources of both the intent and the act."

This is indeed something that as educators, we are able to create this learning environment and community for our children to do well in life.

Children's Day

As Children’s Day is round the corner, you may like to know how Children’s Day was conceptualised and formed. In 1954, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed Universal Children’s Day as a day to promote friendship and understanding amongst children all over the world. The date, 20 November, marks the day in 1959 when the Assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child, and the Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1989, and is often the day chosen by countries as their own designated day to observe Universal Children's Day. This developed into a day that focuses on the issues and needs of children and their families.

In Singapore, Children’s Day is celebrated in Primary Schools on 1 October every year. Schools celebrate this day with concerts, sports activities whereby children can enjoy childhood, demonstrate their talents, skills and abilities through a diverse range of activities.

As Children’s Day approaches, let us wish all our children (from the little ones to the big ones) a very Happy Children’s Day. This song is a timely reminder of the ones we teach and our role as educators.

Keep up the good work as good role models and do remember to help our young ones enjoy their childhood while they have it!

Teach Your Children Well (Click here to watch the video)
~ Song and Lyrics by Crosby Stills Nash & Young
You who are on the road
Must have a code that you can live by
And so become yourself
Because the past is just a good bye.
Teach your children well,
Their father's hell did slowly go by,
And feed them on your dreams
The one they picked, the one you'll know by.
Don't you ever ask them why, if they told you, you would cry,
So just look at them and sigh and know they love you.
And you, of tender years,
Can't know the fears that your elders grew by,
And so please help them with your youth,
They seek the truth before they can die.
Teach your parents well,
Their children's hell will slowly go by,
And feed them on your dreams
The one they picked, the one you'll know by.
Don't you ever ask them why, if they told you, you would cry,
So just look at them and sigh and know they love you.

Take care,
Ed
