How
(Un)certain Are We Today?
Dear friends,
Welcome back to Semester 2! Yes, time certainly flies too quickly. I hope the June break has been a good one and now you are back recharged, full of energy and zest!
The Scouts Motto ‘Be Prepared’ is familiar to many of us. As teachers, we prepare for many things during the calendar year, and sometimes, things don’t go as planned. As a result, we have to redo everything. Things do get a bit frustrating, and sometimes, our stress level increases! I bet we have been through this a few times right? |
|
|
|
|
|
Sometimes, we plan to do so many things. We have meetings, go through our SOPs, and have constant dialogue with our colleagues, thinking that we have done everything right. But at the final hour, there is a change. And it is up to the group dynamics to get things going, redrafting, re-planning and re-crafting things more quickly. Sometimes, “When the going gets
tough....it does get tough indeed”.
Let me share with you my experience here at TN after a period of ten months. Upon reflection, I find I have become a better person. This year, I have learnt many things including how to adapt to changes. Although on some occasions, it has been challenging, at the end of the day, I have made new friends through our common ‘adversity’.
Take heart, my friends. The end product is always a beautiful one. Things change, but they change for the better.

Jim Clemmer once asked if Change Management Can Lead to Rigidity and Resistance to Change:
"We need an unwavering strategic focus on where and what we are going. We need to set priorities, allocate resources, and put implementation schedules in place. But exactly how we get there can only be roughly sketched. Details get filled in as we go. Most of the problems and opportunities can't be anticipated and planned for in advance. We have to take advantage of the unforeseeable opportunities that will quietly present themselves as our journey unfolds. This is the paradox of strategic opportunism. It is the path of learning and constant improvement."

Closing Thoughts
The only thing more painful than presenting a disorganized lesson is an ill-prepared one. If we are not prepared, the entire class suffers – student by student. But the toll it takes on the class is minimal compared to the toll it takes on you. Any lack of preparation will raise your stress levels to record-breaking heights. That is why it is to your advantage to prepare yourself now, rather than suffer later on, sweaty palms and all. As teachers, we should be ready and prepared for all kinds of weather. And whatever we do, we continue to do our best for our students! As they say, “A change will do you good!”
“Plans are nothing. Planning is everything.”
- Dwight D. Eisenhower
Take care,
Ed

Purpose of Teaching Website
|
|

|
The 'Purpose of Teaching' website is at www.moe.gov.sg/purposeofteaching. Teachers will also be able to contribute inspiring stories, media files etc. to the website and we hope that you will send in your contributions and some stories that you have come across in your years as a teacher and a school leader. This site hopes that these contributions can serve to re-ignite in teachers, their passion to teach, and help to reaffirm the purpose of teaching. |
