Teacher Works, a collaboration between Teachers Network and Marshall Cavendish, is a series of publications which highlights the successful practices of local educators.  Contributed by teachers in Singapore, this series showcases successful strategies and innovative ideas for more effective classroom teaching.  It recognises that our teachers are not mere disseminators of knowledge but creators of knowledge themselves.  Engage in an exciting learning experience as you adopt and adapt the ideas presented in this series.

Zoo Trails – Cross-Curricular Tasks for Upper Primary Pupils at the Singapore Zoological Gardens
Zoo Trails, a collaboration between Teachers Network and Singapore Zoological Gardens initiated by AP Berinderjeet Kaur of NIE, is a collection of tasks for Upper Primary pupils to work on while at the Zoo. These tasks provide them with opportunities to apply their knowledge in an inter-disciplinary manner. They engage pupils in active learning through observing, sourcing for relevant information and problem solving.

Zoo Trails provides pupils with an opportunity to experience learning outside the realms of the classroom in a fun-filled manner. Pupils will also get to experience, first-hand, the many aspects of animal and plant life that are often difficult to simulate in traditional classrooms.

How to Purchase
Zoo Trails is sold at $20 at the Zoo.  If teachers want the copies to be delivered to schools, the zoo charges a delivery fee of $5 per location. The delivery fee will be waived if the order is 5 copies or more. For enquiries, contact Ms Lok May Kuen (Lokmk@zoo.com.sg / 63608533).

BIRDPARK TRAILS IN JURONG BIRDPARK

The BirdPark Trails are a collection of three trails, namely Riverine Trail, Rainbow Trail & Waterfall Trail.  Each of these trails allows participants on predetermined routes to do interesting cross curricular tasks, while outdoors in the midst of nature and the birds.  These tasks encourage teachers to tap on the abundance of resources at the BirdPark in order to enrich and enhance inter-disciplinary learning.  The trails also provide pupils with an opportunity to appreciate nature and experience outdoor learning in a fun-filled manner.

BirdPark Trails are the result of the close collaboration of Teachers Network, National Institute of Education and the Jurong BirdPark and the months of hard work of a group of dedicated and enthusiastic teacher-authors, led by Associate Professor Berinderjeet Kaur of NIE.

In light of the call to teachers to ‘Teach Less, Learn More’, we hope that the BirdPark will be a source of inspiration for creativity and innovation, a platform to highlight to pupils the relevance of mathematical concepts in everyday life and an exciting place to sharpen pupils’ observational skills.
